On Wednesday, June 14, members of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Oregon leadership team traveled to the NAHB 2017 legislative conference to meet with Oregon’s Congressional delegation and to attend and lead an array of meetings covering issues important to home builders across the nation and in particular here in Oregon.
Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland members from Oregon included National Directors – Justin Wood, Andrew Tull, Carol Eisenlohr, Jodi Bailey, Tom Skaar, Dick Brown, Rick Massie and James Adkins. Our team had productive meetings with Representatives Walden, Schrader, DeFazio, Bonamici and Senators Wyden and Merkley. In these meetings they conveyed the need to address issues at the federal level including the National Flood Insurance Program, building energy codes, the rising cost of lumber and the critical importance of the mortgage interest tax deduction, the business income tax deduction and the low income housing tax credit to our industry.
NAHB’s lobbyists and staff are tracking multiple issues which will have a direct impact on our ability to deliver land for housing. Their access and influence within the Capitol was on full display during our trip. It was a pleasure to visit with Oregon’s Senators and Congressional members and it was amazing how warmly our visits and our messages were received. It was an honor and a privilege to not only visit with our representatives but also to help them understand our challenges and concerns.
NAHB is a widely respected advocacy group in Washington, DC. Members of both sides of the political spectrum were very receptive to our issues and talking points. In conjunction with this Summer’s board meeting, NAHB also celebrated its 75th anniversary. Congratulations to NAHB for 75 years of representing our issues and industry.
